Trail Review: Andrews Bald, GSMNP

Evident along the entire hike are dead trees, casualties of the Balsam Woolly Adelgid that has killed so many of the trees in the southern Appalachian region. In this section however, fir trees are abundant. The smell is so fresh, damp, and green, and this early in the morning with the trail to ourselves, it’s like we are hiking through the edges of Narnia.

Trail Review: Backpacking Max Patch

I have done a lot of day hikes on the Appalachian Trail. It’s hard not to, when you live in Virginia and grow up hiking in Shenandoah National Park. The AT cuts a path through the heart of the Virginia mountains, and is home to a huge number of day hikes. The older I get,Continue reading “Trail Review: Backpacking Max Patch”

Trail Review: Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve

It’s been awhile since a trail review! Weather, holidays, injuries, and illness have kept us from exploring many new trails over the last couple of months–but that doesn’t mean we didn’t manage at least a couple. I mentioned Buffalo Mountain before in my post about Hygge and the Winter Solstice, but wanted to save reviewingContinue reading “Trail Review: Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve”

Trail Review: Soddy Creek Gorge South (Cumberland Trail Segment)

I’ve gotten more ambitious in our hiking distances. Kairi being old enough to walk 4-5 miles on her own, inspiration from other Hike It Baby families, and a desire to hike as much of Chattanooga as I can are mostly to blame for this. These factors have all combined so when I am planing aContinue reading “Trail Review: Soddy Creek Gorge South (Cumberland Trail Segment)”

Trail Review: Julia Falls Overlook

The hike from Signal Point to Edwards’ Point has been on my Chattanooga trails list since we first started talking about moving down here. My parents got married at Signal Point, and I’m an Edwards on my dad’s side, so there is a lot of personal connection to a place I had never managed toContinue reading “Trail Review: Julia Falls Overlook”

Campground Review: A Tale of Two Parks

After planning our trip to Bear Creek Lake State Park for Kairi’s birthday over the summer, I realized we had a pattern of unique adventure trip for our birthdays. We went to the desert for Sebastian’s, the beach for Billy’s, and a lake for Kairi’s. So I announced that I wanted to go to theContinue reading “Campground Review: A Tale of Two Parks”

Trail Review: Cravens House Trail to Sunset Rock

It’s been almost a month since National Summit Day, so I am very, very, very overdue in sharing this trail! Between camping trips and writing about Virginia, I’m behind in covering some of our TN hiking adventures, and this one is a great place to start. We did this trail shortly after getting into ourContinue reading “Trail Review: Cravens House Trail to Sunset Rock”

Farewell, Virginia: My 5 favorite hikes for kids

We are officially residents of Tennessee, now. The kids and I have been here almost three weeks now, and I am daily longing for my RVA Hike It Baby family, and despite living almost at the foot of Lookout Mountain, every time I see a picture of the Blue Ridge Mountains I feel a hugeContinue reading “Farewell, Virginia: My 5 favorite hikes for kids”

Campground Review: Loft Mountain

A couple weeks ago, a very close friend of mine got some bad news. I had already been debating on taking the kids camping for the night, so when she told me, it cemented my decision: I invited her over, and then whisked her off to the mountains for some nature-therapy in one of myContinue reading “Campground Review: Loft Mountain”

Arizona Part II: The Grand Canyon

I’ve been tagged in enough posts requesting tips on the Grand Canyon, that I have no excuse to delay writing this anymore, even though I don’t know that I have a lot of tips to really offer. I’m not sure we did the Grand Canyon “right,” if there really is a right way to goContinue reading “Arizona Part II: The Grand Canyon”
